Q:
What is play
therapy?
Play therapy helps
children to express their emotions, to have them acknowledged, and to
learn new skills of social interaction. Playing out future stressful
events, such as starting school, or having an operation, makes the event
more familiar, and thus less stressful. It is also helpful for children
who have undergone a disturbing experience, or who live with a difficult
situation.
Typical play materials,
such as a doll family, or puppets, encourage the expression of feelings.
The child might choose the activity and materials for the session, or
may be given play items relevant to his or her situation, e.g. a "doctor
kit" for an upcoming hospitalization.
Q:
How long
does it take?
This is highly variable
and depends on many factors, including the child's beginning level of
unhappiness, the seriousness of the situation, the child's recuperative
powers, and parental support. As in any therapy, the parent can decide
to end it at any time. However, we should keep in mind that children
benefit from predictability.
